Broadcast Division

The Society of Professional Obituary Writers understands that writing and producing obituaries for television and radio presents many challenges that obit writers in the print media do not share.

The SPOW Broadcast Division has been created to address the needs of obituary writers in the broadcast media.

All broadcast obits are not created equal. Television coverage of the life and death of Tim Russert, Washington bureau chief for NBC News and moderator of "Meet the Press," went on for days, while the life and death of Merv Griffin, TV mogul, talk show host and game show creator, was summed up in 3 minutes.

Televised obits for Charles Wheeler featured clips from the late veteran BBC foreign correspondent's career.

We welcome obituary writers and producers from the broadcasting industry to join SPOW and to e-mail links of their obituary work to members@obitwriters.org to be shared on this Web site.
